Instead, employees of the Metaverse are now to be collectively known as Metamates.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tell me more<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark Zuckerberg <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/zuck\/posts\/10114316913387601\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on February 15, 2022, that all employees in the Metaverse shall now be called Metamates. This branding includes employees from Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and all of Meta\u2019s other companies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The incoming CTO of Meta, Andrew \u201cBoz\u201d Bosworth <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claims<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the idea for the \u201cMetamates\u201d moniker came from the physicist, cognitive scientist, and author Douglas Hofstader. Hofstader drew from the Navy\u2019s idea of \u201cship, shipmates, self\u201d to suggest the guiding principle of \u201cMeta, Metamates, Me.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zuckerberg says that Meta, Metamates, and Me is about staying true to the company and its mission and about responsibilities toward and taking care of the company and each other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the adoption of this new motto for the company, Zuckerberg further expounded on four principles for Meta going forward:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Focus on long-term impact<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Implores Metamates to extend their impact beyond near-term wins to doing what seems most impactful in the long-term<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Build awesome things<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Pushes Metamates to building projects that are useful as well as inspirational for the masses<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Live in the future<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Guides Metamates toward distributing work for a future that\u2019s not bound by geography<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Be direct and respect your colleagues<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Asks Metamates to create a culture of straightforward communication, respect, and feedback that acknowledges the expert status of teammates.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, the idea of Metamates hasn\u2019t come without its fair share of mockery from within and without the company.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Metamate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/15\/technology\/metamates-meta-facebook.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asked in internal company chat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if this means they\u2019re on a sinking ship.
